개요

본 리뷰는 김영철·타일러의 진짜 미국식 영어을 읽고 얻은 지식을 정리한 글입니다. 제 편의를 위해 제 임의로 분류하였습니다. 저를 위한 글이기에 이미 아는 표현, 너무 쉬운 표현들은 배제하였습니다.

한국에서 마주친 미국인에게 쓸법한 표현들

대학생 신분일 때, 종종 유학생들이 임신부, 노약자 등이 이용하는 경로 우대석에 앉아있는 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 다행히 경로 우대석에 앉으실만한 분들이 없어서 별말은 안 했지만 앉아있다면 뭐라고 할까..?를 떠올렸던 기억이 난다.
Those seats are for those people(경로 우대석 그림을 가리키면서,,) 아니면 those seats aren’t available for you..? 이 책에서 해답을 알 수 있었다.

-> Excuse me, those seats are for the elderly.

  • 쓰레기 무단 투기하는 사람을 보았을 때!!
    You can’t leave your garbage there.
    You’re not supposed to leave your garbage there. -> 자주 듣고 나름 자주 쓰는데 작문하라고 하면 잘 안 튀어나오는 표현이다.

  • 새치기하지 마세요. Stop cutting in line.

  • 미국인치고 한국어를 너무 잘할 때!!
    You speak Korean pretty well for an American.

  • 공공장소에서 유난히 시끄러운 분들,, 지금 몇 시인지 몰라!?!? Excuse me, could you please keep it down? Do you have any idea what time it is?

칭찬과 관련된 표현들

  • 눈썰미가 있다.
    Thanks for noticing.

  • 너는 패션 센스가 있다.
    You have a good sense for fashion.
    기주’s 표현 : He has an eye for fashion.

  • 첫눈에 반했어요.
    I fell in love with you at first sight.
    살면서 이렇게 오글거리는 표현을 영어로 쓸지는 의문이지만 역시나 작문하지 못했기에 적어둔다. 오글거리다는 참고로 That’s so cringy 이다.

  • 나 영어 많이 늘었어요. I got a lot better at English.

  • 우린 죽이 잘 맞아요. We just click. We get along really well. 기주’s 표현: We are on the same wave-length. OR We’ve got chemistry.

  • 실물이 낫다.
    You look better in real life.

음식점에서 쓸법한 표현들

  • 달걀요리와 관련된 표현
    • 삶은 완숙 계란 : Hard-boiled egg
    • 반숙 : A soft boiled egg
    • 양쪽 다 굽지만, 노른자는 덜 익음 : Over easy
    • 양쪽 다 굽고, 노른자도 익음: Over hard
      TMI: 나는 이 방식의 달걀후라이를 제일 좋아한다
  • 계산과 관련된 표현
    • 나갈 때 한번에 계산할게요. You can pay on your way out. You can pay at the door when you’re done. Pay at the front. cf) 빌지 요청할 때, Can we get the check / bill?
    • 영수증은 따로 받아도 될까요? Could we have separate bills please?
    • 잔돈 다 안 돌려줬어요. You didn’t give me all my change.
    • 현금으로 먼저 결제하고, 나머지는 카드로 결제할게요. Can I (pay some in cash and) put the rest on my card?
    • 이건 계산에서 빼주세요. Can you cancel this one, please?
  • 맛 표현
    • 입안에서 녹아요. It melts in your mouth.
    • 고소한 맛이 나요. This tastes a bit nutty.
  • 서비스와 관련된 표현
    • 치워주시겠어요? Could you take this away, please?
    • 물은 저쪽에 준비되어 있어요. You can help yourself to some water over there.
    • 메뉴 추천해주세요. What’s good here? What would you recommend?
      기주’s 표현 : What’s your signature dish? / What’s the chef’s recommendation?
    • 맡아 놓은 자리에요. Sorry, it’s taken.
    • 제 이름으로 예약했어요. I made a reseration under my name, Paul.
    • 남은 거 가져가도 될까요? Can i get this to go?
    • 시럽을 뺀 아이스커피 한 잔이요. One iced coffee, no sugar, no syrup.
    • 저녁 제가 대접할게요. Let’s go out for dinner, it’s on me.
    • 이거 잘라드릴까요? Would you like to cut it for you?
    • 오는 데 어렵진 않았어? 들러줘서 고마워. Did you find your way here okay? Thanks for dropping by.
    • 나와 음식이 같이 나오게 사진 좀 찍어줄래? Can you take a picture of me and the food?

비행기 안에서 쓸법한 표현들

  • 이거 비행기 안에 가져가도 되나요?
    Can I take this on the plane?
  • 자느라 기내식을 못 먹었는데, 기내식 좀 주실래요?
    (기내식이 영어로 뭐지를 생각하면 망한다!!!)
    I was sleeping. Could I have my meal now?

이성에게 쓸법한 표현들

  • 만나는 사람 있어?
    Are you dating anyone?
    Are you meeting anyone?

  • 여자친구랑 헤어졌어. 여자는 많아. 아직 맞는 사람을 못 찾았을 뿐이야.
    A: I broke up with my girlfriend.
    B: There’s plenty of fish in the sea. You just haven’t found the right person yet.

기주’s 표현: 그냥 plenty of fish라고 짧게 말해도 다 알아듣는다고 한다.
최근에 어떤 사람이 헤어졌다면 He’s on the market now.
TMI : 우리나라에도 품절남,녀 이런 표현이 있는데 이에 반대되는 경우인 것 같다. 언어는 다 비슷한 것 같다는 생각이 든다.

  • 지루할 틈이 없었어.
    Never a dull moment. Never a bad day with you.

  • 시간 가는 게 아쉬워.
    Time flies.
    기주’s 표현: I wish we had more time.

  • 솔직하게 말해줘. Just be straight with me.
    cf) Let me get this straight. = 약간 한 번 더 확인하는 느낌이 있음, double check 기주’s 표현: Keep it one-hunnit. Don’t sugar coat it.

  • 그런 식으로 말하려는 게 아냐. I didn’t mean it that way.

  • 눈이 너무 높아. (다양하게 사용 가능!) You set the bar too high.

  • 눈에 콩깍지 씌었네! You’re really in to her.

  • 나 문자 씹혔어(읽씹). He ghosted on me. 기주’s 표현 : He left me on seen. 페북을 영어 인터페이스로 써보면 메세지를 읽었을 때 on seen 이라고 쓰여있다. 거기서 온 표현이라고 한다. ghosted on ~은 읽씹에 쓰이기엔 너무 과한 표현이라고 한다.

일상에서 쓸법한 표현들

  • 도토리 키 재기다. Not much of a difference.
    기주’s 표현: Y’all look the same to me.

  • 나는 절대 ~할 수 없어. I can’t dance to save my life.

  • 미루지 말고 얼른 해. Don’t procrastinate.
    Just get it done. Get your work done.

  • 어차피 할 거, 지금 해
    Might as well just get it done now.
    Why not just get it done now?

  • 헛수고였어. All that for nothing.

  • 감기 조심해.
    Be careful not catch a (spring)cold.

  • 겨울이 다가오나봐, 해가 짧아졌어.
    Winter is coming, the days are getting shorter. The sun sets early nowadays.

  • 보기보다 의외로 똑똑하네.
    He is a lot smart than he looks.

  • 오늘 컨디션이 별로야.
    I’m feeling a bit under the weather. I’m not feeling so hot today.

  • 한 귀로 듣고 한 귀로 흘려 (Let it) In one ear and out the other. 기주’s pick: Don’t let it bother you too much.

  • 너 방 환기 좀 시켜 Air out your room.

  • 돈 굳어서 좋겠다. It’s great you can save money.

  • 거기에서 막 왔어. Yeah, actually, i was just there.

  • 오는 길에 아이스크림 좀 사다 줄래?(어느 공간이 지칭되었을 때) While you’re at it, would you get me some ice cream? 기주’s 표현 : On your way back, can you grab an ice cream?
